[00:00:01] I was having a dream much like any other I'd had before. There was some loosely strung together plot, apparently only in retrospect. Somewhere I had to be, an object of my pursuit that seemed to elude and taunt me.

[00:00:17] I moved forward without understanding why. There were people around me, and who those people were changed without warning, and sometimes I was no longer acting, but instead watching myself act as if viewing some abstract and esoteric film.

[00:00:33] That all changed when I found his wallet. It was brown leather, worn and scuffed from many years of going into back pockets, then back out from being tossed on the counter when he got home from being sat on.

[00:00:48] It was sitting in a puddle under a bridge I did not recognize and could not find again if I needed to. I picked it up and turned my head, looking for whomever it could belong to, noticing only then that I was alone.

[00:01:03] The faceless and shifting and impermanent throng of dream travelers was no longer with me. It was grey January, and gentle rain fell everywhere, except under the cover of the bridge, and the wallet was damp with cold and I was alone holding it.

[00:01:21] There was money inside the wallet. Red and blue bills with faces on them that I did not recognize. Strange nonsense denomination. A six note, a thirty, one thousand units of whatever currency this was.

[00:01:38] My instincts told me to take some. Just one of those dream thoughts you have no control over. I stuffed a few bills in my side pocket.

[00:01:47] I remember a moment of pause as I realized I was wearing an old pair of cargo pants that, in reality, are sitting in the back corner of my closet, unthought of for some time.

[00:01:59] His ID was in the front flap behind a thin plastic film. His name was Harold Haying Harris, and he was smiling like he knew something. Something about me.

[00:02:13] I decided I didn't want the wallet, and dropped it in the puddle where I'd found it.

[00:02:19] Strange dreams often stay with you for a few moments upon waking. At least that's how it is for me.

[00:02:26] Usually I come back with only a few pieces. I lay in bed, hesitant to move or change anything, scared that motion will draw me further into the waking world.

[00:02:37] All I ever want is to go back to sleep. I live my days in anticipation of that moment.

[00:02:44] Climbing into bed, pulling the covers up until they cover my mouth and my nose. Breathing my own exhales.

[00:02:51] The way your body eventually starts to dissolve. You feel heavy, half paralyzed.

[00:02:57] There's a comforting warmth as your stomach goes up and down with each breath, drawn automatically.

[00:03:03] Laying there, trying to preserve my comfort.

[00:03:07] That's usually when other pieces of the dream return.

[00:03:12] That night, it was still dark. Somewhere in the quiet moments preceding twilight.

[00:03:18] I lay thinking about where I'd just been. Somewhere familiar, in many ways.

[00:03:24] The dark evergreens, the gunmetal sky.

[00:03:27] But not anywhere I'd ever actually been.

[00:03:31] Likely not a place that truly exists, I thought.

[00:03:34] Just a creation of my mind.

[00:03:37] I remembered the rain.

[00:03:39] How cold it had been.

[00:03:41] I thought about the puddle and, suddenly, I remembered the wallet.

[00:03:45] The strange bills.

[00:03:47] Harold's picture.

[00:03:48] I could see it so vividly.

[00:03:50] Could see his name.

[00:03:52] I rolled over in my bed to face the window.

[00:03:55] It's always been my theory that if you want to fall back into the dream you've just woken from, your best bet is to stay in the same position.

[00:04:04] Don't move a muscle.

[00:04:06] Close your eyes and let yourself drift back to the place you just left.

[00:04:10] I imagine it has something to do with blood pooling in certain areas of the brain.

[00:04:15] Our thoughts occupy physical space inside our head.

[00:04:19] The things our imaginations conjure are not entirely intangible.

[00:04:23] A lot of people don't get that.

[00:04:26] I had no desire to go back into that dream.

[00:04:30] I feared it.

[00:04:32] So, I turned over, hoping that would help.

[00:04:35] Icy rain pelted my window and wind-driven bursts.

[00:04:40] Every time I closed my eyes, my thoughts returned to the dream.

[00:04:44] Walking in a crowd, pursuing some undefined thing that was just beyond my ability to recall.

[00:04:51] Finding the wallet.

[00:04:53] Harold Haying Harris.

[00:04:56] I sat up and bet I have enough experience falling in and out of the same nightmare to know how this was going to go.

[00:05:04] Unless I did something to stop it.

[00:05:06] What you need in those moments is an interruption.

[00:05:09] Get out of bed.

[00:05:10] Go to the bathroom.

[00:05:12] Get some water.

[00:05:13] Walk around for a minute.

[00:05:14] Anything that functions as a reset.

[00:05:18] After making the circuit.

[00:05:20] Bathroom.

[00:05:21] Kitchen.

[00:05:21] Back to bed.

[00:05:22] I decided to check my phone.

[00:05:24] I don't remember seeing what time it was.

[00:05:27] I don't even remember opening Google and typing in his name.

[00:05:30] I suppose I thought it might help to quickly confirm what I already knew.

[00:05:35] That Harold was not a real person.

[00:05:38] That he was simply a thought inside my head.

[00:05:41] What I found was his blog.

[00:05:45] It was a WordPress site.

[00:05:47] They're easy to identify.

[00:05:49] The one I built to post my writing years ago had a similar layout.

[00:05:53] Nearly 100 entries.

[00:05:54] Each with his name at the top.

[00:05:57] There was a small picture next to his name in the byline.

[00:06:01] The same picture from his wallet.

[00:06:04] The same smile.

[00:06:06] I turned on my bedroom light and waited for sunrise.

[00:06:11] Harold appeared to be some sort of lifestyle blogger.

[00:06:15] That's as close as I can get to describing what I found.

[00:06:18] He lived in a city called Kadesh and wrote about his days there.

[00:06:23] I skimmed the entries.

[00:06:25] Most were boring.

[00:06:27] Today I went for a lovely walk down 21st street.

[00:06:30] The leaves are beginning to turn.

[00:06:32] If you're looking for a delicious cup of coffee in the area, consider...

[00:06:37] Stuff like that.

[00:06:38] A few though were strange.

[00:06:41] I began to wonder if there might be something wrong with Harold.

[00:06:44] Some sort of condition.

[00:06:45] And if this blog might best be viewed as almost voyeuristic insight into the mental degradation of a sick man.

[00:06:54] Earlier today in the gray hours of the morning, all the birds fell out of the sky in unison.

[00:07:00] Did anyone else see this?

[00:07:04] I was ready to stop reading.

[00:07:06] Until I stumbled upon that line.

[00:07:10] I kept scrolling to see if it was an outlier.

[00:07:13] I found others.

[00:07:14] This one buried at the end of a long entry about the best thrift stores located on the sleepy main strip.

[00:07:22] I noticed the cashier from Second Chances following me.

[00:07:27] To each subsequent store I visited, he was hiding behind a clothing rack in exchange.

[00:07:32] I found him sitting alone in a locked dressing room in moonlight jewels.

[00:07:37] I'm worried he may have followed me home.

[00:07:40] I took a much longer and less straightforward path back to my place, but couldn't shake the feeling someone was behind me.

[00:07:48] Lacking just far enough back to stay out of sight.

[00:07:52] He made me very uncomfortable.

[00:07:54] I don't think I will be returning to the store, despite their excellent selection of second-hand cutlery and china.

[00:08:03] Each post contained a link to a map which traced his path.

[00:08:08] Places where he stopped, like restaurants and bakeries and shops, were noted.

[00:08:13] I zoomed out from one of these maps, curious to see where in the world Kadesh was located, and was disturbed to note it was in my state, not far from my home.

[00:08:25] I'd nearly driven past it many times.

[00:08:28] It was north and west of me, close to the Pacific Ocean.

[00:08:32] Strange that I'd never heard the name before.

[00:08:35] I checked the map on my phone, comparing it to Harold's.

[00:08:38] I zoomed closer and closer, but where Kadesh was on the map was nothing but empty green space on mine.

[00:08:46] A featureless spot in the woods, with no roads and no shops, and nothing else of note except for a small lake.

[00:08:54] The lake was on both maps.

[00:08:58] I found an entry of Harold's which involved it.

[00:09:02] Walked to Cressman Lake today.

[00:09:05] There's a bench at the edge of the water where I like to sit.

[00:09:08] You'll find a lot of flat stones at the base of this bench, perfect for skipping across the glass-like surface of the water.

[00:09:15] It's a good place to spend an afternoon when you need to clear your mind.

[00:09:20] I worry that he will return soon.

[00:09:23] I see him in my dreams.

[00:09:28] The lake.

[00:09:29] Cressman to him, unnamed to me, was a 90-minute drive from my house.

[00:09:35] I had no plans for the day.

[00:09:37] Nothing to stop me from filling it with three hours of driving.

[00:09:41] Round trip, plus however much time I would spend at the lake.

[00:09:45] Doing what?

[00:09:47] Looking for it?

[00:09:48] I didn't stop to think.

[00:09:50] I opened my closet and packed a few changes of clothes quickly, feeling an urgent need to get on my way.

[00:09:56] Logic would necessitate that all I needed were the clothes on my back for such a trip.

[00:10:01] That makes me wonder if I knew even then what I was going to find.

[00:10:07] If I knew somewhere in that part of my brain which can't speak, not out loud at least, where I was going.

[00:10:15] The first hour of the drive was navigating from my residential street to the highway and then heading due north.

[00:10:25] It was the same boring, uneventful drive I'd done hundreds if not thousands of times.

[00:10:31] I chased bright blue skies up the round of the earth.

[00:10:35] It was an unseasonably beautiful day.

[00:10:38] Blue and gold with viciously cold wind.

[00:10:42] The weather lifted my spirits.

[00:10:44] It was easy to forget what I was doing.

[00:10:47] The mountain was on my right, slowly falling behind me with each mile I drove.

[00:10:52] I watched its white, snowy bulk travel from my passenger window to the rear window to the rear windshield before vanishing altogether.

[00:11:02] It was time to head west.

[00:11:05] Two miles further along the road I'd exited to, a nondescript state road with numbers for a name,

[00:11:12] my GPS commanded me to turn right onto an unnamed, unmarked dirt road that carved a path through grey, barren trees.

[00:11:21] I could see that it went straight for a few hundred feet before curving out of sight to the left.

[00:11:27] The road was wide enough for one car and full of dips that shook me from side to side as I passed over them,

[00:11:34] going no more than ten miles per hour.

[00:11:38] Somewhere along this road, which connected with so many others just like it that I lost count,

[00:11:44] lost sense of which direction I'd been turned in, then turned out of, then turned back around into,

[00:11:49] clouds filled the sky, blocking out the sun, making it feel much more like the January afternoon it was.

[00:11:57] And then I saw it just ahead.

[00:12:01] The lake.

[00:12:03] I parked my car in a dirt turnaround and walked to the water.

[00:12:08] No wind blew and, likewise, the lake sat still and silent, patient.

[00:12:14] The color of the sky a perfect imitation of what sat above me,

[00:12:19] equally as still, as if buried in the dirt was some grotesquely massive looking glass.

[00:12:26] I began to walk its circumference clockwise.

[00:12:30] The day was quiet.

[00:12:32] Nothing moved.

[00:12:33] I heard birdsong off in the distance, but saw no birds.

[00:12:38] The only other sound was the destruction of whatever crunched beneath my feet with each step.

[00:12:44] Every time I rounded another turn, I would tell myself that it was time to turn back.

[00:12:49] My feet would continue forward,

[00:12:51] and I would convince myself that one more corner was what I needed.

[00:12:55] I knew that just around the next tree, there would be something for me.

[00:13:00] Something that was waiting just for me.

[00:13:03] I continued this way until I found myself on the opposite side of the wide lake,

[00:13:08] miles from where I'd part.

[00:13:10] There was no way to mark the descent of the sun,

[00:13:13] save the gradual dulling of the light, the curtailing of the hidden day.

[00:13:18] I turned back, bitterly disappointed.

[00:13:22] I've no idea how long I walked, because despite certainly retracing my steps,

[00:13:28] the lake and its shore providing the surest guide any wanderer could hope for,

[00:13:32] I failed to reach my car, where it should have been.

[00:13:36] And of this I am also sure.

[00:13:39] The empty dirt patch of my arrival was unmistakable,

[00:13:43] as were my own so recently treaded tire tracks,

[00:13:47] stood now only a forlorn bench.

[00:13:51] I sat and attempted to slow my racing mind.

[00:13:55] I felt, after a few moments of slow, steady breathing,

[00:14:00] the strangest sense of comfort and normality.

[00:14:04] Darkness overtook the sky.

[00:14:07] I had no car, no sense of where I was.

[00:14:11] Even my phone was gone.

[00:14:14] Sitting still, presumably, in the cup holder where I had left it.

[00:14:18] And yet I did not panic.

[00:14:20] I felt certain there was nothing to fear.

[00:14:24] I should have known better.

[00:14:27] There was light in the distance,

[00:14:29] blowing beyond the far side of the lake,

[00:14:32] city lights polluting the dark sky.

[00:14:34] I saw them on the clouds and reflected on the black surface of the water,

[00:14:39] which had become otherwise indistinguishable from the solid ground on which I sat.

[00:14:45] I stood and began my dark journey back again around the lake,

[00:14:50] hoping that some unknown grace would prevent me from wading into a cold, lonely death.

[00:14:58] The city looked as I imagined it.

[00:15:01] A delicate mist hung around the streetlights.

[00:15:04] People walked past each other on the sidewalk with their heads down,

[00:15:09] mostly in pairs or alone.

[00:15:11] I stumbled into a greenway,

[00:15:14] entering from the tree line where the city ended.

[00:15:16] There was a gazebo with string lights wrapped around the wood lattice.

[00:15:21] A couple embraced in that spotlighted podium.

[00:15:25] Storefronts lined the main strip,

[00:15:27] all with their orange lights projecting warmth upon the shivering sidewalk.

[00:15:33] Somewhere, someone roasted peanuts.

[00:15:36] I felt welcome despite no one noticing me.

[00:15:40] There are said to be events so shocking that one could not face them and remain unchanged.

[00:15:47] Events which, due to their nature, their magnitude, their substance,

[00:15:52] taint the immortal spirit of man and make him forever after something different.

[00:15:59] Unsurvivable moments.

[00:16:01] I'm not speaking of occurrences which stay the beating heart

[00:16:05] or disconnect the corporeal from the inanimate.

[00:16:09] I say unsurvivable to say that there is a dividing line,

[00:16:13] a place in the gray where one can clearly separate white from black

[00:16:18] and say, without question,

[00:16:20] the person I once was no longer exists.

[00:16:25] I found myself facing such a moment

[00:16:28] not long after entering this lost city beyond the trees.

[00:16:34] I walked along the town's central road slowly,

[00:16:38] stopping to gaze at the items displayed in shop windows

[00:16:41] or to watch the people tromping aimlessly up and down the sidewalk.

[00:16:46] The first store I entered was a sweet shop.

[00:16:49] The purveyor was a kindly older woman,

[00:16:53] and the walls were lined with clear buckets of candy with turnstile bottoms.

[00:16:58] What I noticed first was the lack of recognizable brands.

[00:17:01] Even the packaged candy sitting on shelves was bland and generic.

[00:17:06] There was no names on any of the labels,

[00:17:09] no familiar logos.

[00:17:11] I stretched my hand beneath one of the buckets

[00:17:14] and twisted the knob one time,

[00:17:16] loosening some multicolored hard candy from its cage,

[00:17:20] which I placed immediately into my mouth.

[00:17:22] It had no taste.

[00:17:24] The woman behind the register,

[00:17:27] her face ruddy and beaming,

[00:17:29] stared straight forward

[00:17:30] and seemed not to notice me.

[00:17:34] Back on the sidewalk,

[00:17:36] a familiar pair passed me.

[00:17:38] Familiar because they'd walked past me once before,

[00:17:42] heading the opposite direction.

[00:17:43] They were a couple of indeterminate sex,

[00:17:47] arm in arm,

[00:17:48] their heads bent forward as if against an agitating wind.

[00:17:52] The air was still,

[00:17:54] and the evening quiet.

[00:17:56] I crossed the street,

[00:17:58] and entered what appeared to be a record store.

[00:18:01] It was dark inside.

[00:18:03] Dim, yellow globe lamps hung from the ceiling,

[00:18:06] casting meager spotlights onto each aisle.

[00:18:10] From the back of the store,

[00:18:11] a familiar,

[00:18:13] vocal-less melody played softly.

[00:18:15] I wandered slowly up the first aisle,

[00:18:18] trying to determine the genre of the section.

[00:18:21] It was labeled alphabetically.

[00:18:24] I stopped where appropriate,

[00:18:26] looking for names I would recognize,

[00:18:28] finding none.

[00:18:29] Upon finally making it to the back wall,

[00:18:32] I searched for the owner,

[00:18:33] or at least whomever was tending the store.

[00:18:36] There was a long counter,

[00:18:38] which ran the length of the wall.

[00:18:40] Behind the counter was an open door.

[00:18:42] The back room was the source of that familiar melody.

[00:18:46] Someone was moving around in there.

[00:18:49] I could see his shadow.

[00:18:51] I opened my mouth to call out for assistance,

[00:18:54] but an alarming sense of foreboding stole over me,

[00:18:58] silencing me at once.

[00:19:00] I left quickly.

[00:19:03] On the sidewalk again,

[00:19:05] the same couple walked past,

[00:19:07] bent forward,

[00:19:08] determinedly.

[00:19:09] I was beginning to feel uncomfortable.

[00:19:13] In this veritable ghost town,

[00:19:15] I myself was the spectral figure,

[00:19:18] and worst yet,

[00:19:19] I was stuck here,

[00:19:21] unable to leave,

[00:19:22] with no one knowing where to look for me

[00:19:24] or even that I was gone.

[00:19:27] With the reality of my situation settling in,

[00:19:31] I began to walk quickly back the way I'd come.

[00:19:34] I cannot speak with certainty about my intentions

[00:19:37] because I did not make it far,

[00:19:40] although it seems to me now,

[00:19:41] in retrospect,

[00:19:42] that I was heading for the woods again.

[00:19:45] The lake,

[00:19:47] which,

[00:19:47] while dark and cold and ominous in its own right,

[00:19:50] was at least a lonely place,

[00:19:52] and anywhere felt safer in that moment

[00:19:56] than this strangely populated strip.

[00:19:58] And total solitude seemed better company

[00:20:01] than these reactionless,

[00:20:03] empty people

[00:20:04] who seemed to contain no purpose,

[00:20:07] no vivacity,

[00:20:08] no animation whatsoever.

[00:20:11] Something compelled me to turn to my left

[00:20:14] and gaze in the lit window of the final store

[00:20:17] before rounding the corner

[00:20:19] which would have taken me

[00:20:20] back to the town green,

[00:20:22] the gazebo,

[00:20:22] and the tree light.

[00:20:24] It was a second-hand store

[00:20:26] named Second Chances.

[00:20:28] I recognized the name at once

[00:20:30] from Harold's writing.

[00:20:32] A strange man stood behind the register,

[00:20:35] smiling,

[00:20:36] his eyes locked on mine.

[00:20:38] He saw me.

[00:20:41] For the first time since entering Kadesh,

[00:20:43] I was certain that someone was aware of me.

[00:20:46] How I wished in that moment

[00:20:49] for the complete anonymity

[00:20:51] I so fully dreaded just minutes before.

[00:20:55] I wanted nothing more

[00:20:56] than for this man not to see me,

[00:20:59] for him to have never seen me.

[00:21:01] I turned,

[00:21:02] prepared to run for the trees,

[00:21:05] hoping with every ounce of my being

[00:21:07] that he would not jump over the counter

[00:21:10] and give chase.

[00:21:12] What greeted me upon turning back

[00:21:15] drove that thought entirely from my mind.

[00:21:19] The townspeople had stopped pacing.

[00:21:22] They'd ceased wondering aimlessly.

[00:21:25] All stood completely still in unison.

[00:21:29] Their heads turned to me,

[00:21:31] slowly,

[00:21:32] like a hive mind

[00:21:33] that had become aware of the interloper.

[00:21:36] I darted around the corner,

[00:21:38] horribly aware as I turned my head

[00:21:40] that they intended to follow.

[00:21:42] I ran without looking back,

[00:21:44] ran in fear that one might catch me

[00:21:47] before I reached the tree line,

[00:21:48] in fear that this tree line

[00:21:50] might lack the talismatic quality

[00:21:52] which I was placing upon it.

[00:21:54] A safe haven,

[00:21:55] somewhere I would be untouchable.

[00:21:58] A man leapt from an alleyway,

[00:22:00] intercepting me.

[00:22:02] Before I had a chance to defend myself,

[00:22:04] I was being dragged into the darkness,

[00:22:07] a hand placed over my mouth

[00:22:09] to stifle my screams.

[00:22:11] He whispered into my ear,

[00:22:14] trying to calm me,

[00:22:15] and then we were backing into a door

[00:22:17] which he slammed shut

[00:22:19] and locked behind us.

[00:22:20] We were in a storage room

[00:22:22] with boxes stacked high

[00:22:24] along one wall

[00:22:25] and a bare metal shelf

[00:22:27] containing all sorts of tools.

[00:22:31] You'll be safe in here,

[00:22:33] he said.

[00:22:34] It was Harold,

[00:22:36] the man I'd dreamed about.

[00:22:39] I struggled to speak,

[00:22:41] backing away toward the locked door.

[00:22:44] Don't,

[00:22:45] he said.

[00:22:46] Let me out of this room,

[00:22:48] I said.

[00:22:49] You're safer here.

[00:22:52] Why should I believe

[00:22:53] you care about my safety?

[00:22:54] Who are you?

[00:22:56] I thought you would know,

[00:22:58] he said,

[00:22:59] speaking more to himself than me.

[00:23:02] Something pounded viciously

[00:23:04] on the door behind me,

[00:23:06] making me jump.

[00:23:07] It was the townspeople,

[00:23:10] still set,

[00:23:11] apparently,

[00:23:11] on hunting me.

[00:23:13] Come on,

[00:23:14] upstairs,

[00:23:16] said Harold.

[00:23:17] I paused,

[00:23:18] but only for a moment.

[00:23:20] I did not trust Harold,

[00:23:22] not entirely,

[00:23:23] but there was something kind

[00:23:25] and friendly about his face.

[00:23:28] The dream tried to return to me,

[00:23:30] or perhaps a different dream.

[00:23:32] Everything was mixed up inside my mind,

[00:23:35] trying to congeal and present a formed picture.

[00:23:38] The savage beating at the door is what decided for me.

[00:23:43] I didn't trust it would hold.

[00:23:45] I followed Harold up a wooden staircase,

[00:23:48] emerging in the lobby of a small inn.

[00:23:50] He grabbed a key from a post where it hung among many others,

[00:23:54] and then rushed me up another set of stairs,

[00:23:57] and then another.

[00:23:58] We stopped at room 306.

[00:24:01] He unlocked it,

[00:24:03] handed me the key,

[00:24:04] and shoved me inside.

[00:24:07] Don't come out until morning.

[00:24:09] Draw your blinds.

[00:24:10] If anyone knocks at the door,

[00:24:12] be silent,

[00:24:13] and keep it locked.

[00:24:15] He shut the door on my face.

[00:24:18] The room was small,

[00:24:21] one twin bed,

[00:24:22] and an old dresser of stained wood.

[00:24:24] A desk underneath the curtained window held a reading lamp,

[00:24:28] sheets of paper,

[00:24:29] and a pen.

[00:24:30] I stood over it a moment,

[00:24:32] tried the pen in my hand.

[00:24:34] It was warm,

[00:24:35] as if only recently leaving a strong hand set to accomplish something significant.

[00:24:41] I wrote my name on the paper.

[00:24:44] I wrote Harold's name on the paper.

[00:24:48] I wrote his full name.

[00:24:50] I wrote it again.

[00:24:52] On the bed,
